Backlit Keys, Distance Sensor, Banks of Extra Knobs

Backlit Keys, Distance Sensor, Banks of Extra Knobs

April 14, 2022 Uncategorized 0

I modified this custom Akai APC Key 25 midi keyboard, adding a distance sensor (similar to a Roland D-beam) and 7 additional knobs, assignable to 3 banks. Midi-activated backlit RGB keys match a strip in the near-side bottom edge, to hang over a rack and shine on gear below. The missing pitch bend control is added. An oled display shows what midi notes are coming in, on a little keyboard graphic, so you can jam along with those notes safely knowing they are in the song you are accompanying. It also gives an overview of where all the midi controls are set.

When it’s all zero, it shows it’s owner’s name, the intrepid Kevin Luu @prodbykevluu that you should follow.

I modified this Akai APC Key 25 with:

  • a distance sensor (similar to a Roland D-beam)
  • 7 additional knobs, assignable to 3 banks.
  • Midi-controlled backlit RGB keys match a strip in the near-side bottom edge, to hang over a rack and shine on gear below.
  • The missing pitch bend control.
  • An oled display shows what midi notes are coming in, on a little keyboard graphic, so you can jam along with those notes safely knowing they are in the song you are accompanying.
  • It also gives an overview of where all the midi controls are set.

All this happens via two sparkfun promicro arduinos and a usb hub added to the empty space in this keyboard. There’s even a new external spare usb port added.

This is not the first or last of this particular keyboard I have done similar upgrades to. Features and price are negotiable. Follow for more adventures. Tell a friend if y’all support mad science.
